The quite amazing depth of bottle deposit gives the game away for this hand-crafted wine. Greg Brown, on a small farm just outside St Helena, is a self-taught winemaker who has just enough wine to sell to five states. His wife drives the tractor. This small-run Syrah is very creditable, very flattering and definitely Syrah. It's a bit sweet but well made and claims to be 'just' 13.8 per cent alcohol. Jancis Robinson
