Marking the entry point into the Lithology range, the 2019 Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is blended from several different lots. There's a slightly smoky, herbal note, plus plenty of ripe blueberry and cassis fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, rich and liquorous, it finishes with a velvety feel and notes of warm chocolate and Yemeni coffee.
Billionaire Argentinian businessman Alejandro Bulgheroni purchased the former Napa Valley Reserve property from Bill Harlan in 2016. That's where his flagship wine and the Lithology series of vineyard-driven luxury Cabernets are made under the day-to-day direction of winemaker Matt Sands. Atelier Melka provides consulting services, and Michel Rolland comes in to participate in putting together the final blends. A quick look at the wines reviewed reveals that the wines are based on grapes purchased from Andy Beckstoffer. In addition to these wines, Bulgheroni acquired the Justice and Waypoint wine brands when he purchased the downtown Napa wine merchant, wine bar and BBQ joint, Bounty Hunter.
