Offering up big minerality, cedar box, spice, cherry and cassis aromas and flavors, it is a medium to full-bodied blend that has a light, fresh texture, almost no evolution and a classically constructed, focused finish. A joy to drink, it should continue to evolve for another decade or more. Drink now-2023+. Focusing exclusively on their estate DuBrul Vineyard, this first-rate winery was created in 2002 by Kathy and Hugh Shiels. The wines, now made by their daughter Kerry Shiels since 2009, highlight elegance and finesse with impeccably balanced profiles, silky, light textures and beautiful polish to their substantial tannins. These are not powerhouse reds, yet have an age-worthy feel across the board and I would be shocked if their top Cote Bonneville bottling wasn’t drinking brilliantly at age 25. But we love it for the challenge,” he hastens to add. “Even a monkey can make a great Syrah, but Grenache , We’ve got 7 acres of this grape now,” compared with more or less 25 of Syrah, he reports, commenting: “You’ve got to be crazy!” Fresh strawberry and elderberry are tinged with birch bark extract, black tea, and basil, making for an aromatically intriguing and lip-smacking palate presence. An upwelling of beef marrow and a Syrah- (or Gewurztraminer-) like hint of smoked meat add to the wine’s saliva-inducing savor. Here is a really vivid illustration of how the best Washington wines offer nearly luxuriant richness and sweet berry intensity but at the same time exhilarating vibrancy and lift. And, true to Baron’s repeatedly stated intentions, there are – beyond salt, stone, and smoky aura of black tea – elements impinging on this wine’s superbly sustained finish that can only be called “mineral,” even if one can’t find further words for them. I suspect this will be worth following for at least a decade. Incidentally, the wine was vinified in concrete and then aged in demi-muids plus one concrete egg. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, the wine expresses the semi-carbonic notes of sweet red fruit and dusty red flower petals with iron and lava rocks. It has expressive and silky tannins that linger on the long, ethereal finish. I am impressed! This is delicious juice and is a must-have for serious collectors. Brilliantly defined dark cherry notions with aromas of rose hip and black spice tones sashay out of the glass. Nuances of dusty leather and wild strawberry float on top of the glass with red floral bouquet aromas. With 13.5% alcohol, this pure, medium-bodied wine is chock-full of flavor, bursting at the seams with a subtle smoky tone that perfectly frames the ripe red fruit. The palate is balanced with a velvety mouthfeel and energizing acidity to age for more than a decade. It displays expertly managed tannins and spiced red fruit that continues to unpack and evolve with mind-blowing complexity. The long-lived finish has a mineral tension and offers up notions of wild strawberry, dark cherry skin, newly opened peonies and luxurious and elegant black spice tones—another brilliant bottling from Christophe Baron. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Syrah, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, it fermented with limited pump-overs and forced air cap contact but no punch-downs (the danger with this fruit – particularly Syrah from Candy Mountain, allegedly Washington’s warmest site – is over-extraction, notes Nicault), and spent an amazingly long 30 months in nearly all new barrels (albeit, per Nicault, of “the more delicate sorts”), an approach its author thinks apt for the marriage of Syrah with Bordelais cepages. Polished, even creamy in texture, with its tannins totally tenderized, as is the case with most Long Shadows wines, this also displays seamlessness in terms of its interfacing of varieties – or at least, I can’t pull out many characteristics specific to any one of them. Jellied cassis, dark cherry, and blueberry mingle with milk chocolate, caramel, and vanilla, meaty or mineral tones being largely absent or sublimated ,but a faintly bitter herbal note is, perhaps, a contribution of the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, while a suggestion of black pepper in the finish is surely traceable to Syrah. The most striking thing about this wine beyond its sweet sense of richness and its polished texture is a welcome sense of buoyancy. Nicault envisions it being a 15-year-keeper, which may well be accurate, though I can’t say I envision how it might evolve over such a lengthy period. High-toned evocations of herbal distillates are married to confitured dark berries, chocolate, caramel and spice cake. The tannin here is powdery, if not quite melted; and 14.9% alcohol in no way mars a soothingly sustained, rather dessert-like finish. I envision this as being worth following for at least 6-8 years. Melka utilizes smell wooden fermentors. (Interestingly, a modest amount of Syrah was included in the first three renditions of Pirouette, but was significantly reduced in 2006 and did not reappear thereafter.) Allen Shoup’s vision and ambition for Long Shadows – not to mention his financial commitment (banks, he reports, only ever kicked-in 20% of the total investment) – was and remains audacious, and he has clearly lived up to the promise he made to each of the world-renowned vintners whom he invited to craft a wine from Washington State that no expenses would be spared in giving them whatever it was they wanted from Long Shadow’s facilities, as well in extended elevage and leisurely release dates. “They took me up on my word a lot more than I thought they would,” says Shoup with a laugh. Along the way, manifestly talented Gilles Nicault – hired-away from Woodward Canyon in 2003 with the idea that he would be the point man doing the bidding of his much more famous winemaking colleagues – became more of a consultant and confident to them as well as being assigned a label and project of his own under the Long Shadows umbrella; and in 2006 a huge and hugely impressive facility was completed west of Walla Walla to house this unique operation. The number of visits made by each winemaking luminary to taste and tend his project varies, but there is every indication that they all take their aesthetic capital in Long Shadows (in which each also has an ownership share) very seriously. All of the above granted, as inspiring as this project and the participation of such internationally famous talents is – and must be as well for the growers of Washington collectively – those veterans who have set this State’s qualitative benchmarks were not in need of a Long Shadows to learn how or be inspired to render distinctive world class Washington wine. I’ve included a few details about the approach behind each of the Long Shadows wines in my notes on their most recent releases below. “If somebody went through these wines and said it was quite clear that they exhibited a common Long Shadows thread,” explains Shoup, “I wouldn’t like that compliment, because what I want is that each of these wines has its own signature.” Generally speaking though, I find a common denominator of extremely sweet, ripe, confitured fruit and surface polish. It also strikes me that the money Shoup and company aren’t sparing on new wood makes for one of their most efficacious but also least well-considered expenses, since many Long Shadow reds are awfully obviously marked by their toasted oak.
