However, once I finally got them out of the fermenters and into barrel, then boom, they took on life, freshness and personality and now I absolutely love them! I have never seen such a dramatic change in quality in such a short period of time. Granted, I have only been doing this since 2007 so it's not like I have a huge amount of perspective but it would be fair to say that not only was I surprised but also I believe that these wines are the best that I have made to date. I used more whole cluster in the vinifications, which is to say up to 80% and I'm very happy that we did as I believe that doing so helped to preserve freshness. It was necessary to really watch the extractions though because the color and tannins came so easily that I began to worry that they would lack refinement. Obviously they're still not in bottle but the potential that they already show surpasses everything that I have made to date.\" While it is of course entirely possible that M. Bernstein's prognostication that the 2015s are the best he has ever made, and indeed they are lovely wines, but I am not sure that they will ultimately outshine his 2010s. Either way, both are worth considering and for that matter, don't forget Bernstein's 2014s as they too are most impressive. Bernstein again underscored that because his wines are bottled with slightly higher levels of CO2, he suggests that readers decant them if they're going to open bottles early on. It's of course natural to believe that each vintage has a unique character and as such, it becomes easier to discuss the wines of that vintage as though they all resembled each other due to these shared characteristics. But that's not the necessarily the case with 2009 because there were, in a sense, two flowerings, one early and one late depending on the sector in question. Because of this, you could easily have surmaturité in the precocious sectors and better balanced wines, especially from an acidity standpoint in later maturing sectors. The early terroirs are almost easy with very generous and round characters whereas the late maturing terroirs are much more classic. We picked from the 7th to the 21st of September and leading up to the harvest, and then every day thereafter, we systematically visited the vineyards to decide exactly when the optimum moment to pick might be. It's rare to see such a clean crop and there was almost nothing to sort. The lack of any sorting losses contributed to the relatively generous yields even though we did a green harvest in July. We were actually worried about the yields in August because it appeared that we dropped too much fruit. Yet when we started crushing the fruit everyone was surprised by the amount of juice and this explains why the acidities were lower than we expected. In the end, we believe that our lower yields going into the final part of the growing season helped us because the lower the bunch load, the earlier that you had phenolic maturity and thus the earlier that you could pick, thus helping to preserve acidity. Even with this advantage, we did have to acidify a few wines but not much and only in red. The whites were tricky in the sense that even 24 hours was enough to pass from having enough acidity to having a deficit so you had to be especially vigilant. While it's hard to be sure, this may be due to the fact that there was a lot of sunshine in 2009, in fact 5 to 7% more than in a normal year. The skies were almost always clear and this helps to explain the high degree of phenolic ripeness. Because of this, we did a fair amount of whole cluster fermentations in the Côte de Nuits, which ranged between 20 and 50% except for the Cazetiers which was 100%. As to the wines, 2009 is riper than 2005 but it doesn't have the same solid to liquid ratio and thus the wines are not as concentrated. Despite the fact that 2009 doesn't have just one style, the classification hierarchy was well respected because unlike say 2003, each level is clearly better than the one below it. One of the interesting aspects of the vintage is how much many of the reds improved during the course of the élevage and it probably unlike the '05s, the '09s will probably not shut down in their youth. But in the end, as good as the '09s are, it's clear that it's not 2005 in red or 2008 in white. Take any textbook on making fine pinot and that's what we had in 2005. The consistency from one berry to the next was incredible. I can't say we did much during the fermentations either except watch. This is a very red-fruity, spicy, earthy style of Pinot Noir with forest floor, pomegranate, red cherry and redcurrant, lots of spice in a medium-bodied, tart style. It tastes as if some stems are involved in the fermentation (whole clusters). Drink it over the next 4-8 years. You had to be really careful pruning the vines as the accumulated effects from three consecutive years of hail in the Côte de Beaune had made many of them quite fragile. We also had significantly different yields as they were normal in the Côte de Nuits but quite low in the Côte de Beaune. One of the really nice things about the vintage is how clean the fruit was and given that the harvest weather was so clement we could basically pick each parcel when we felt it was ready, a luxury that isn't always available. While we didn't use whole clusters for every wine, we did use between 10 and 50% for many of them. Another interesting aspect of this vintage is how much the wines have changed over time as initially they seemed almost heavy and a bit flat at first but as the élevage progressed, they tightened up and actually became fresher and more focused. At that point we said that there was nothing further to be gained from keeping the wines in cask so we bottled the entire range between December 2016 and January 2017. I was seriously impressed with the quality of the Drouhin 2015s as their style for lighter and more elegant burgundies seemed to marry especially well with what is effectively a notably ripe, rich and concentrated vintage. While the Musigny is almost without fail excellent at this address, I also found the Clos de Vougeot, Griotte, Petits Monts and the straight Chambolle villages to be particularly fine. If you enjoy the Drouhin style then these are wines to make a special effort to find and cellar over the next 8 to 15 years. Hervet will not begin in his new position until January 1st;, he is spending time \"familiarizing\" himself with Faiveley's operations and personnel. Both of them profess to be \"very happy with 2005. The malos were slow and long and many did not finish until September and while it's too soon to be sure, we may delay the bottling a month or two as a result.\" In my view 2005 is a great vintage for Faiveley though as with any domaine with a range this large, some wines are more successful than others. Still, provided that you're prepared to allow the wines to age for the most part at least 10 years, they should absolutely be on your short list of wines to buy this vintage. It's really rare to see grapes as fine as this with beautiful balance between the phenolic ripeness, sugars and acidities that gives the wines the same perfect balance. And it was an ideal harvest under dry and sunny but cool conditions and we could harvest at our leisure. And the cherry on the cake was that we had reasonably good yields at between 35 and 37 hl\/ha with sugars in the 13% range and there was virtually nothing to sort as the crop was so clean. The grapes had thick skins and ripe seeds and gave up their colors easily. The malos were long and some of the wines didn't finish until September though we view this as a good sign. Lardière basically could not have been more positive about the 2005s, enthusing that it was a \"super clean vintage with unbelievably beautiful fruit. And the fruit was ripe too if not as ripe as 2003 and interestingly, it was even riper for pinot than it was for the chardonnay. The only real concern was here in the Côte de Beaune because for the fourth year in a row, it was extremely dry and the vines are clearly suffering in certain soil types or when the vines are very young with shallow root systems. By contrast, the Côte de Nuits had a bit more rainfall and with some\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eterroirs\u003c\/i\u003e, it was enough to make the difference between excellent wine and truly great wine. In fact, this extra moisture often enabled the vines in the Côte de Nuits to bring their fruit to full maturity before those in the Côte de Beaune, which is rare and as a consequence, we harvested many parcels in the Côte de Nuits first. Because of this, I don't hesitate to say that in 2005 the Côte de Nuits is clearly better than the Côte de Beaune. To be clear though, this is not to say there were not some great wines made in the Côte de Beaune because there were. However, the drought very much favored more humid soils types. To my way of thinking, 2005 is a classic vintage and thus I treated the fruit as such in terms of vinification. The average wine saw a total\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003ecuvaison\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eof around 21 days (including 10 to 12 days of post-fermentation maceration) and I allowed the temperatures to rise to a maximum of 37 to 38º C (98 to 100º F). I also believe that the '05s will need a relatively long\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eélevage\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eto find the harmony of the tannins to combat the dryness they displayed early on. We used a bit more new oak than usual because the wines are so concentrated as well as the natural aeration that the greater porosity of new wood provides. As I say, 2005 is a classic vintage and the Côte de Nuits wines resemble a blend of the very best 1985s and the more concentrated 1990s and they should make old bones.\" Lardière noted that all of the '05\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003egrands crus\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewill be bottled in a bottle called La Sommeliàre, which has a classic shape and is, comparatively speaking, quite heavy. In fact, a number of domaines told me that they have elected to use this bottle for their best wines in 2005. Lardière basically could not have been more positive about the 2005s, enthusing that it was a \"super clean vintage with unbelievably beautiful fruit. And the fruit was ripe too if not as ripe as 2003 and interestingly, it was even riper for pinot than it was for the chardonnay. The only real concern was here in the Côte de Beaune because for the fourth year in a row, it was extremely dry and the vines are clearly suffering in certain soil types or when the vines are very young with shallow root systems. By contrast, the Côte de Nuits had a bit more rainfall and with some\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eterroirs\u003c\/i\u003e, it was enough to make the difference between excellent wine and truly great wine. In fact, this extra moisture often enabled the vines in the Côte de Nuits to bring their fruit to full maturity before those in the Côte de Beaune, which is rare and as a consequence, we harvested many parcels in the Côte de Nuits first. Because of this, I don't hesitate to say that in 2005 the Côte de Nuits is clearly better than the Côte de Beaune. To be clear though, this is not to say there were not some great wines made in the Côte de Beaune because there were. However, the drought very much favored more humid soils types. To my way of thinking, 2005 is a classic vintage and thus I treated the fruit as such in terms of vinification. The average wine saw a total\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ecuvaison\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eof around 21 days (including 10 to 12 days of post-fermentation maceration) and I allowed the temperatures to rise to a maximum of 37 to 38º C (98 to 100º F). I also believe that the '05s will need a relatively long\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eélevage\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eto find the harmony of the tannins to combat the dryness they displayed early on. We used a bit more new oak than usual because the wines are so concentrated as well as the natural aeration that the greater porosity of new wood provides. As I say, 2005 is a classic vintage and the Côte de Nuits wines resemble a blend of the very best 1985s and the more concentrated 1990s and they should make old bones.\" Lardière noted that all of the '05\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003egrands crus\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewill be bottled in a bottle called La Sommeliàre, which has a classic shape and is, comparatively speaking, quite heavy. It is directed by the young Thibault Liger-Belair, who is a cousin of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair (see above). Liger-Belair has also just added an estate in the Beaujolais, which has added yet more breadth to his range. He offered an interesting take on 2009, saying that it was a \"vintage of sap. 2005 was a vintage of concentration but '09 really has that sappiness that gives the wines their charm. The fruit was rich in sugar but low in acidity and thus the big challenge was to retain the freshness. I had relatively generous yields of around 32 hl\/ha but for my old vines, that is a lot and the biggest that I have had since I started. I did a very light vinification, which in some cases included no punching down at all as I wanted to avoid having robust, or even rustic, tannins. I also have already racked some of the wines out of cask to avoid inadvertently drying them out. In many cases, they already drink well as they have that minty character, which is to say fresh but not necessarily with much acidity behind the freshness. For me, 2009 is an excellent vintage but not truly a great one. I say this because I like tension in my wines and 2009 isn't really in that style. Still, they give plenty of pleasure and thus they should be very popular. Paul Hobbs has built quite an empire, both as a worldwide respected wine consultant and as the owner of his winery in Sonoma Valley. I reviewed his Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon cuvees in Issue 209, and on this visit I tasted through his 2011 and 2012 Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs as well as a few Syrahs. His wines consistently hit all the high notes, and Hobbs continues to be a serious talent. I particularly enjoy his Cross Barn, inexpensive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The 2011 Chardonnays range from tiny productions of 138 cases for the Ulises Valdez to 3,600 for the Russian River Chardonnay. The 2012s all reveal the tremendous up-front fruit characteristics of this year along with surprisingly high average alcohols, and good fresh acids. Paul Hobbs has introduced two Cross Barn Pinot Noir cuvees, one from the Sonoma Coast and one from Anderson Valley. These wines use a tiny bit of stems during their fermentations, and spend four months in barrel, 15% of which is new. The wood is still a little present on the nose but underneath lies some lovely, floral tinged raspberry fruit laced with blackcurrant and creme de cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip on the entry, well-judged acidity. This has fine grip, a bullish Pommard but with great depth and poise on the finish. This will outlast many a Pommard in 2012. Rapping the door at Domaine Dugat-Py, at first sight I thought that Bernard Dugat had aged a little…about thirty years to be exact. Now I know that his parents live in the conjoined house next door and that his son inherited his looks from his father, Pierre Dugat, as well as some of the most propitious vineyard holdings in Gevrey. Bernard’s wines have always had a modern sheen with relatively high use of new oak from his village crus upwards (100% for all his premier and grand crus.) These are not wines for those expecting subtlety or “transparency” – they are packed with intense flavors, bold structure and occasionally extravagant finishes. The 2012s are no exception, but for the most part these wines handles the new oak with aplomb, principally because a combination of grand crus and old vines give the solid foundation for that level of new oak, that culminate in a quite audacious Mazis-Chambertin. Of course, as Bernard mentioned, his preponderance of old vine material meant that he was hit hard by millerandage and as a consequence yields are miniscule: around 18 or 19hl\/ha. The harvest commenced on 21 September with the premier crus and like many growers the malo-lactics were late, which meant that I was unable to taste two or three crus such as the Gevrey Petite Chapelle. My take on the style and quality is that the 2017s are like more interesting versions of the 2007s.
